About This Blog

As a teacher of English to adults of other languages, I am interested in the process of learning. I thought it would be fun and interesting to begin learning a language from scratch while also observing my experience as a learner.

I chose Greek because I have a personal interest (some friends are Greek). A couple of months ago, I only knew how to say the Greek alphabet and how to say "Hi".

For the "absolute beginner" stage, I've started with the Conversational Modern Greek series of CDs from Pimsleur. I like that there is no textbook and minimal grammar; it's strictly audio. Babies learn their first language without a book, so I think that it's a fine way to begin.

I'm supplementing my audio studies with other activities. There is no method to this. I'm trying some of the recommendations I usually offer to my English learners (after all, I should be willing to taste my own medicine ...!) but mostly I'm letting curiosity, mood and instinct drive my choices.

I hope this experience makes me a better teacher.
